London, July 12, 2025: India’s pace ace Jasprit Bumrah had the press room in splits on Saturday after delivering a brilliant five-wicket haul at Lord’s. During the post-day press conference following Day 2 of the third Test against England, a reporter’s phone rang mid-question—prompting Bumrah to quip:
“Somebody’s wife is calling. But I won’t pick it up.”
The light-hearted moment capped off a stellar day for the 31-year-old speedster, who returned figures of 5/74 under the blazing London sun. His scalps included England’s key batters Harry Brook, Joe Root, and Ben Stokes, restricting the hosts to 387.
Bumrah’s performance earned him a spot on the prestigious Lord’s Honours Board—a milestone he values, but not more than the memories he’s created on the field.
“When my son grows up, I can tell him my name is on the Honours Board… but for me, memories are more special than records,” said Bumrah, reflecting on his journey.
He fondly recalled India’s historic win at Lord’s in 2021, when he and Mohammed Shami stunned England with a match-turning 89-run unbeaten partnership for the ninth wicket. Bumrah had scored 34* while Shami hammered 56*, flipping the match in India’s favour. He later chipped in with 3/33 as India secured a memorable 151-run win.
“That Test match will always be special to me. We came from behind and bowled them out in 60 overs. That’s the kind of memory that stays with you,” he added.
Having sat out the second Test due to workload management, Bumrah returned with renewed firepower, silencing speculation around his fitness with a maiden five-wicket haul at the iconic venue.
On dealing with public expectations and constant scrutiny, Bumrah remained grounded and philosophical:
“As long as I play for India and wear this jersey, judgments will come. Even when Sachin sir played 200 Tests, he was judged. It’s part of the game. I’ve accepted that.”
“I just try to contribute every time I step on the field. That’s my focus, not the noise,” he concluded.
