📍 Forde (Norway), October 3, 2025 : India’s weightlifting icon Mirabai Chanu added another feather to her illustrious career, clinching a silver medal in the women’s 48kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships 2025.
The 2017 World Champion and two-time Olympic medallist lifted a combined total of 199kg – 84kg in snatch and 115kg in clean & jerk – to secure her place on the podium once again.

Snatch: Chanu struggled, failing twice at 87kg, before settling at 84kg.

Clean & Jerk: She displayed her trademark strength, completing 109kg, 112kg, and 115kg in successive attempts.
Notably, her 115kg lift matched her effort from the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, where she won silver.
Chief coach Vijay Sharma had set the target of breaching the 200kg barrier at this competition, marking a key step in Chanu’s transition back from the 49kg category.

Ri Song Gum’s record-breaking lifts of 120kg and 122kg in clean & jerk underlined her dominance, while Sukcharoen narrowly trailed Chanu by just 1kg in the overall standings.

For Chanu, this silver marks her third World Championship medal, reaffirming her consistency at the elite level. Her comeback to the 48kg division has reignited hopes for another strong Olympic campaign, with her focus now shifting to qualifying events leading up to Paris 2028.
