BHADERWAH, April 11, 2026 : In a major step towards preserving educational heritage, the government has approved the redevelopment of the historic Boys Higher Secondary School Bhaderwah in Bhaderwah, transforming the 106-year-old institution into a heritage school under the ‘Prerna’ initiative.

The foundation stone for the ₹3.06 crore project was laid by Additional Deputy Commissioner Sunil Kumar Bhutyal in the presence of school Principal and alumnus Kailash Chander.

Established in 1920 by Dogra ruler Maharaja Pratap Singh, the institution—earlier known as Amar Singh High School—holds the distinction of being the first high school in the Chenab Valley region. Over the decades, it has played a pivotal role in shaping generations of students and producing distinguished achievers.

Speaking on the occasion, Bhutyal said the redevelopment under the ‘Prerna’ Heritage School scheme aims to create an immersive and inspiring learning environment. The project is designed not only to preserve the institution’s historical legacy but also to motivate students to become future change-makers.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of Narendra Modi, focusing on nurturing youth through heritage-based education models. The upgraded infrastructure is expected to blend tradition with modern educational facilities, offering students a unique academic experience.

Principal Kailash Chander described the moment as deeply personal and historic, sharing that three generations of his family have been associated with the school. Leading the institution after its recognition as a heritage school, he said, is a proud milestone in his life.

Historically, the school has seen several academic affiliations—from the University of the Panjab before Independence to Banaras Hindu University, and later the University of Jammu and Kashmir. Since 1974, it has been affiliated with the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education. The school was rechristened as Model Higher Secondary School during the 2015–16 academic session.

With this heritage makeover, the iconic institution is set to enter a new era—preserving its rich legacy while inspiring future generations
