JAMMU, February 18, 2026 : The Government of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday informed the Legislative Assembly that 219 ventilators are defunct across 10 Government Medical Colleges (GMCs) and the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences in the Union Territory.

The disclosure was made in a written reply to a starred question raised by Shamim Firdous, with Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo placing detailed, hospital-wise data before the House.

According to the official figures, out of 877 ventilators installed in government medical colleges, associated hospitals and major health institutions, 658 are functional, while 219 are currently non-functional.

Hospital-Wise Status of Ventilators

  • GMC Jammu and its associated hospitals have 320 ventilators, of which 209 are functional and 111 are defunct, marking one of the highest numbers of non-functional units.

  • GMC Srinagar:

    • SMHS Hospital has 76 ventilators, with 68 functional and 8 defunct.

    • Other associated hospitals under GMC Srinagar have 173 ventilators, of which 44 are non-functional.

  • GMC Anantnag and its associated hospitals reported a critical situation, with only 10 functional ventilators against 26 defunct, out of a total of 36.

  • GMC Baramulla has 41 ventilators, with 2 reported non-functional.

  • GMC Doda has 27 ventilators, of which 10 are defunct.

  • GMC Kathua reported 2 non-functional ventilators out of 52.

  • GMC Rajouri has 54 ventilators, with 3 not working.

  • GMC Udhampur reported all 39 ventilators as functional.

  • GMC Handwara also reported 100 per cent functionality, with all 6 ventilators working.

  • At SKIMS, Soura, 13 out of 53 ventilators were reported to be non-functional.

The data has raised concerns over critical care preparedness, particularly in peripheral and high-load institutions, with several members seeking timely repair, replacement and accountability to ensure uninterrupted life-saving services.
