Srinagar, February 2, 2026 : An earthquake measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale struck the Kashmir Valley early Monday morning, triggering panic among residents, particularly in Pattan and adjoining areas of Baramulla district, officials said.
According to the National Centre for Seismology, the tremor occurred at 5:35 am at a depth of 10 kilometres, with its epicentre in the Pattan area, around 10 km northeast of the tourist resort Gulmarg. The tremors reportedly lasted for nearly 20 seconds, forcing people to rush out of their homes in fear.
Initial estimates had pegged the earthquake’s magnitude at 4.6, which was later revised to 4.7 after review by seismological authorities.
Officials confirmed that no loss of life or damage to property has been reported so far. However, the quake caused widespread anxiety, especially in north Kashmir areas that are prone to seismic activity.
The Kashmir Valley lies in a highly active seismic zone. As per the National Seismic Hazard Map released by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in November last year, the entire Himalayan arc, including Kashmir, falls under Seismic Zone VI, indicating very high risk.
The region has a history of devastating earthquakes. On October 8, 2005, a 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck areas on both sides of the Line of Control, flattening large parts of Kashmir and resulting in the deaths of thousands along with massive infrastructure damage.
Authorities have urged people to remain calm but vigilant and follow safety protocols in case of aftershocks.
