Srinagar, September 3, 2025 :  Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Wednesday chaired a high-level review meeting to assess the situation triggered by incessant rains that have swollen rivers and streams across the Union Territory.

According to officials, the continuous downpour since Tuesday has led to a sharp rise in water levels in south and central Kashmir, including Srinagar, though the Jhelum and its tributaries are still flowing below the danger mark. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department, however, has warned that water gauges are steadily rising and could increase further if rainfall continues.

Highway Blocked, Schools Closed

The heavy rains have also caused landslides, shooting stones, and waterlogging at multiple points on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), forcing its closure for all vehicular traffic. Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, the administration has ordered the closure of all schools and colleges across the Kashmir division for the day. Universities have postponed scheduled examinations, including those of Kashmir University.

CM’s Directions

In the review meeting, CM Abdullah instructed the administration to:

  • Intensify ground response and ensure clearance of waterlogged areas.

  • Safeguard essential services such as power, water, and healthcare.

  • Conduct timely evacuations in vulnerable areas.

  • Provide immediate relief and assistance to affected families.

“Hon’ble Ministers @JavedRanaa and @satishsharmajnk briefed on the situation in Jammu, while Hon’ble Minister @sakinaitoo and Advisor to the CM @nasirsogami provided updates on the situation in Kashmir. The Chief Minister appealed to the people to follow advisories, avoid vulnerable spots, and stay safe,” the CM’s Office said in a post on X.

Advisory to Public and Officials

The Irrigation and Flood Control Department has issued a public advisory urging people not to venture close to rivers, streams, and other water bodies. All officers assigned flood duties have been directed to immediately report to their posts.

Officials emphasized that while the water level has risen by several feet in various areas since Tuesday, the situation remains under close watch, and all departments have been placed on alert.
