Srinagar, September 5, 2025 : Jammu and Kashmir Minister Sakina Itoo on Friday criticised the administration of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha for refusing to shift the official holiday for Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, despite what she termed “repeated requests” from the elected government.
While Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi will be observed in J&K on Saturday as per the Islamic lunar calendar, the holiday was marked on Friday under the Union Territory’s official calendar.
Calling the decision “totally unjust,” Itoo said in a post on X that the administration was “playing with the emotions of the people” by not observing the holiday on the actual date of the festival. “What does ‘subject to appearance of the moon’ mean if it is not followed?” she questioned.
The Minister maintained that such decisions should rest with the elected government, adding that the L-G administration had taken a similar stand in the past over shifting Eid holidays.
