Srinagar, September 8, 2025 : Jammu and Kashmir Education Minister Sakina Itoo on Monday stated that nearly 40 schools in flood-affected areas remain closed and will be reopened only after ensuring safe and hygienic conditions for students. The decision has been taken to safeguard children’s health and learning environment amid the ongoing recovery efforts.
Speaking to reporters, Itoo explained that the schools were impacted by floods, which severely affected their cleanliness. In several cases, displaced families were provided shelter in these schools, further delaying restoration. “These schools were shut down because of floods which impacted their cleanliness. Many affected families had also been sheltered in these institutions. That is why around 40 schools are still closed,” the minister said.
She emphasized that reopening will happen only when authorities are fully confident that safety standards are met. “We are working tirelessly to restore normal functioning as soon as possible, but we must ensure that students’ health and education are not put at risk,” Itoo added.
The minister further clarified that this closure directive applies exclusively to the flood-affected areas, while schools in other parts of Jammu and Kashmir continue to operate normally.
