New York, Sept 25 : The United States has once again reaffirmed that Kashmir remains a direct issue between India and Pakistan, stressing that Washington has “no interest in asserting itself” in the matter.
A senior US State Department official, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, underlined that it has been America’s longstanding policy to view Kashmir strictly as a bilateral issue.
“If the US is asked to offer its good offices on any issue, we are ready to help. But we have no interest in asserting ourselves between India and Pakistan,” the official clarified.
The official further noted that President Donald Trump is already managing “enough crises” and that Washington prefers both countries to resolve the matter on their own.
In his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), President Trump reiterated his claim that he had once helped prevent escalation between India and Pakistan, saying the US had played a key role in brokering a ceasefire during a past crisis.
While the US acknowledges its limited involvement in defusing past tensions, New Delhi has consistently maintained that no third-party mediation is acceptable in its dialogue with Pakistan, especially on issues linked to terrorism. India insists all disputes must be addressed strictly through bilateral channels.
