Jammu, Sept 25 : Veteran Congress leader Dr. Karan Singh, son of the last Dogra ruler of J&K, on Thursday voiced deep concern over the recent violence in Leh town of Ladakh, which claimed four lives and left dozens injured.
In a strongly worded statement, Singh urged the Central Government to carefully examine the demands of the youth, stressing that their aspirations must be addressed through constitutional safeguards.
“I have been deeply disturbed by the unrest in Ladakh. Ever since 1947, the people of Ladakh have been solidly pro-India and have always assisted security forces whenever needed,” Singh said.
He noted that Ladakhi youth are increasingly resentful due to dwindling employment opportunities, particularly after the region lost its Public Service Commission, forcing candidates to compete at the All-India level.
Singh said that inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution could be a “reasonable solution” to meet the aspirations of the people.
Appealing for restraint, Singh added:
“The authorities must consider these demands seriously to prevent the agitation from escalating, as it could have negative security implications in the long run. I also appeal to the people of Ladakh to remain calm and press their demands peacefully.”
The appeal comes amid heightened tensions, curfew, and security clampdowns in Leh following widespread clashes and arson during protests seeking statehood and constitutional safeguards.
