Srinagar, October 28, 2025 : The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed noisy scenes on Tuesday after Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather rejected an adjournment motion by the BJP seeking a discussion on the recent floods and the resulting “humanitarian crisis” in the Union Territory.
As soon as proceedings began, BJP MLA Pawan Gupta moved the motion to suspend the Question Hour and hold a debate on the floods. However, the Speaker denied the request, stating the matter was “not of recent occurrence” and had already been discussed earlier.
“There are many questions admitted on this subject, and the Chief Minister gave a detailed reply yesterday,” Rather said, urging members not to disrupt the session.
BJP legislators, however, continued raising slogans — “Jammu ke saath insaaf karo” (Do justice with Jammu) — demanding immediate discussion.
The Speaker reiterated that Gupta’s resolution on the same subject was already listed for Wednesday and warned against wasting the House’s time. Following his clarification and citation of procedural rules, the BJP members eventually resumed their seats, allowing proceedings to continue.
The J&K Government had earlier estimated flood-related losses at ₹209 crore in the agriculture and allied sectors, and said a report had been sent to the Centre seeking relief assistance.
