Srinagar, October 29, 2025 : Jammu and Kashmir has recorded more than 2.12 lakh dog bite cases in the last three years, the government informed the Assembly on Tuesday, acknowledging a growing public health concern.
In a written reply to NC MLA Mubarik Gul, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Housing and Urban Development portfolio, revealed that 98,470 cases were reported from the Jammu division and 1,14,498 cases from Kashmir division since 2022.
According to official data, Jammu district topped the list with 54,889 cases, followed by Srinagar with 36,406, Anantnag with 26,453, and Baramulla with 18,563. Shopian district recorded the lowest at 1,357 cases.
To address the crisis, the government said a comprehensive sterilisation and immunisation drive for stray dogs is underway. From June 2023 to September 2025, as many as 48,998 stray dogs have been sterilised and vaccinated.
The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) led with 27,237 sterilisation cases, followed by the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) at 13,730, while other districts accounted for 7,870.
The Chief Minister informed that while Srinagar has two operational Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres and a third under construction, plans are in progress to set up such centres in nine more districts. Land has already been identified for facilities at Baramulla, Kulgam, and Sumbal in the first phase.
With dog attacks posing serious health risks, the government faces increasing pressure to scale up sterilisation efforts and urban waste management reforms to curb the menace.
