SRINAGAR, November 11, 2025 : In the wake of a recent security breach involving the recovery of arms and ammunition from a doctor’s locker at Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag, authorities have issued strict directives for staff and students to identify and label all personal lockers in GMC and SMHS hospitals across Kashmir.

A circular issued by the Administrator, Associated Hospitals, Srinagar, instructed all faculty members, heads of departments, paramedical staff, and students to personally label their lockers with name, designation, and code by November 14.

“It is impressed upon all the faculty members, heads of departments, paramedical staff, and students to personally identify their lockers and label them with their name, designation, and code,” the circular reads.

Officials said that once the deadline lapses, medical superintendents and inspection teams will carry out a detailed verification drive. Any unidentified or surplus lockers occupying hospital corridors or unused spaces will be removed or seized.

The order also specifies that no LPC (Last Pay Certificate), NOC, or service book will be issued to any employee on transfer until their assigned locker is formally handed over.

A similar directive has been issued by the Medical Superintendent of GMC Anantnag, asking all departments to identify and tag lockers or almirahs. Any unclaimed storage unit must be reported immediately to the administration.

The directives come after a doctor was arrested in Srinagar last week for allegedly keeping arms in his locker and posting material supporting the banned terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed.

According to police, the accused — identified as Adil Ahmed, a resident of Anantnag — was working at a private hospital in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He was taken into custody by the Srinagar Police on Thursday.

ASP (City) Vyom Bindal confirmed that Adil was handed over to J&K Police after his arrest.

The move to label and verify lockers is seen as a preventive step to strengthen internal security and ensure transparency within hospital premises.
