Chandigarh, November 18, 2025 : In a significant development along the India–Pakistan border, the Border Security Force (BSF) has successfully neutralised 255 drones infiltrating from Pakistan this year. According to senior officials of the BSF Punjab Frontier, these drones were primarily being used for smuggling heroin, weapons, explosives, and other contraband into Indian territory.
BSF Inspector General Atul Fulzele stated that with the onset of the fog season, visibility in border areas decreases, creating opportunities for smugglers to use drones for illegal activities. In response, the BSF has implemented enhanced surveillance measures to counter the threat.
“We have made necessary arrangements to address low-visibility challenges. Special surveillance equipment will be deployed during fog, and strict monitoring of riverine stretches will continue. We are reinforcing our overall surveillance grid,” IG Fulzele said.
He further added that BSF troops are closely monitoring movement near the border, especially individuals attempting to retrieve drone consignments dropped from across the border.
Strengthened Joint Operations
To curb smuggling networks, the BSF and Punjab Police will conduct joint checks on routes leading to border areas. “We do it every year and will do it this time as well,” the IG noted.
Seizures and Arrests in 2025 (Till November 14)
The BSF has also reported major recoveries and arrests this year:
-
329 kg heroin recovered
-
16 kg ICE (methamphetamine)
-
191 weapons
-
12 hand grenades
-
Over 10 kg explosives
-
3 Pakistani intruders neutralised
-
240 Indian smugglers arrested
-
19 Pakistani nationals apprehended
Just a day earlier, BSF personnel recovered 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition from the Muthiawala area in Ferozepur, further highlighting the ongoing attempts to push arms into India.
Drone Threat Rising
Earlier this month, BSF reported intercepting 251 drones, indicating a sharp rise in drone-based smuggling from Pakistan. With the fog season approaching, officials anticipate increased attempts and are preparing accordingly.
