Srinagar, March 19, 2026 : Several higher reaches of Kashmir Valley witnessed fresh snowfall, while plains including Srinagar were lashed by heavy rainfall, bringing down temperatures across the region, officials said on Thursday.

Prominent tourist destinations such as Gulmarg and Sonamarg received intermittent snowfall, with Gulmarg recording an accumulation of around five to six inches of fresh snow since the previous day.

Other higher-altitude areas also experienced snowfall, including Pir Ki Gali along the Mughal Road, Razdan Top in Gurez, and Sadhna Top. Officials noted that most upper reaches of the valley have been witnessing intermittent snowfall since Sunday.

In contrast, the plains across the valley, including Srinagar, experienced continuous heavy rains, contributing to a significant dip in day temperatures.

According to the India Meteorological Department, erratic weather conditions are expected to continue until March 20, with intermittent light to moderate rain or snowfall likely across most areas.

The MeT department has also forecast:

  • Moderate to heavy snowfall in higher reaches of the Chenab Valley and parts of south Kashmir

  • Generally dry weather from March 21 to 24, with a brief spell of rain/snow possible on March 23

  • Another light spell between March 26–28, especially in higher altitudes

  • Fresh rain/snow spell from March 29–31

Additionally, there is a possibility of thunderstorms, gusty winds (40–50 km/h), and isolated hailstorms in some areas.

The MeT Office has advised farmers to resume agricultural activities after March 21, when weather conditions are expected to stabilise.
