Jammu, March 27, 2026 : The newly established 243-bedded Maternal and Child Care (MCC) facility at SMGS Hospital has significantly strengthened neonatal and perinatology services across the Jammu region, the Assembly was informed on Friday.
Minister for Health and Medical Education Sakeena Itoo shared this while responding to a query raised by legislator Yudhvir Sethi during Question Hour.
Key Improvements
- 👶 Enhanced newborn care facilities
- 🤱 Improved maternal health services
- ⏱️ Reduced waiting time for planned surgeries
- 🏥 Strengthened handling of critical referrals from peripheral hospitals
SMGS Hospital continues to function as a tertiary care centre, offering specialized services in:
- Gynaecology & Obstetrics
- Pediatrics
- ENT
- Dermatology
MRI Facility in Pipeline
Patients currently requiring MRI are referred to Government Medical College Hospital Jammu.
However, relief is expected soon as Indian Oil Corporation Limited has agreed in principle under its CSR initiative to provide an MRI scanner, subject to formal approvals.
Staffing & Infrastructure
- 🧑⚕️ 682 posts filled out of 1070 sanctioned
- Additional staff being engaged under academic arrangements
- 🚗 Proposal for multi-tier parking under review with Jammu Municipal Corporation and Smart City project
Larger Impact
The MCC facility, equipped with advanced machinery, is expected to:
- Reduce Infant Mortality Rate (IMR)
- Lower Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR)
- Improve overall patient care delivery
This initiative reflects the government’s continued focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure and ensuring better services for the people.
