Jammu, March 30, 2026 : Former Chief Minister and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday emphasized the need for collective efforts by both government and opposition to restore the strength and dignity of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
🔍 First Visit Since 2018
Mufti visited the Assembly and watched proceedings from the Speaker’s gallery—her first appearance since 2018, after the fall of her BJP-supported government. She attended part of the Question Hour alongside PDP legislators, including Rafiq Ahmad Naik, who praised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for a detailed reply on tourism.
⚖️ Concern Over Assembly’s Authority
Reflecting on the institution, Mufti said:
“Our Assembly is very important, but its value and authority have, in one way or another, been diminished since 2019.”
She was referring to the year of major constitutional changes that altered Jammu and Kashmir’s political structure.
🤝 Call for Collective Responsibility
The PDP chief stressed:
- Both ruling party and opposition must work together
- Restoration of Assembly’s stature requires shared commitment
- PDP will play a constructive role in rebuilding the institution
📜 Policy & Governance Focus
Mufti highlighted that PDP has introduced practical bills within the current UT framework, including:
- Creation of new divisions and districts
- Granting ownership rights to long-settled poor families
She also urged the government to fulfil poll promises, especially on:
- Employment
- Reservation
- Regularisation of daily wage workers
Calling it a humanitarian concern, she said:
“Daily wagers are struggling to make ends meet… this must be addressed seriously.”
🌍 Remarks on Global Situation
Commenting on tensions in West Asia, Mehbooba Mufti said Iran’s resolve and sacrifice could shape the outcome, highlighting the contrast in military morale.
