JAMMU, May 18, 2026 : A potential power crisis is emerging in Jammu district as reduced discharge in rivers has significantly affected hydroelectric power generation, leading to electricity outages in several areas amid rising temperatures.

The Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited (JPDCL) said the decline in river discharge has impacted overall power supply and increased pressure on the electricity network.

In a post on X, the department stated, “Lower discharge in rivers reduced power generation, affecting power demand and causing outages in many Jammu areas last night.”

The corporation further said that efforts are underway to procure additional electricity to manage the situation and minimise disruptions.

“Efforts are made to procure power to tide over the crisis,” the department posted, while appealing to consumers to use electricity judiciously.

“Consumers are requested to use power judiciously. Inconvenience regretted,” the post added.

The situation comes at a time when temperatures have started rising sharply across Jammu region. According to official weather data, the maximum temperature in Jammu city settled at 37.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department issued an advisory warning of a further increase in daytime temperatures across several parts of the Jammu division.

“There will be a rise in day temperature by 2-4°C at many places, with hot and dry weather at a few places in the plains of Jammu division,” the advisory stated.

The combination of soaring temperatures and reduced power generation has raised concerns over increased electricity demand in the coming days, especially during peak summer conditions.
