GUWAHATI, May 19, 2026 : Rishabh Pant was on Tuesday removed as vice-captain of the Indian Test squad for the upcoming one-off match against Afghanistan and also dropped from India’s ODI squad for the ensuing three-match series against the same opponents.
KL Rahul has replaced Pant as vice-captain of the Indian Test side, which will be led by Shubman Gill.
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee also decided to rest pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah from both the Test and ODI assignments as part of workload management ahead of India’s tour of England later this summer.
Senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has also been rested for the one-off Test match.
India’s home series against Afghanistan will begin with a one-off Test in Mullanpur starting June 6, followed by a three-match ODI series to be played in Dharamsala, Lucknow and Chennai from June 14 onward.
“Bumrah will be back when we tour England. He is working on his workload,” chief selector Ajit Agarkar told reporters after the selection meeting in Guwahati.
Among the notable inclusions, spinner Manav Suthar and pacer Gurnoor Brar earned their maiden call-ups to the Test squad. Both players are teammates at IPL franchise Gujarat Titans.
Meanwhile, Prince Yadav received his maiden ODI call-up, while Ishan Kishan returned to the ODI setup as the second wicketkeeper.
