SRINAGAR, May 21, 2026 : A houseboat partially sank after water entered the structure along the River Jhelum in the Bund area of Srinagar on Thursday, prompting an immediate rescue and evacuation operation by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and River Police.
According to officials, the incident led to severe waterlogging inside the houseboat, resulting in partial sinking and triggering panic in the surrounding area.
Soon after receiving information about the incident, rescue teams from the SDRF and River Police rushed to the spot and launched coordinated rescue measures to prevent further damage.
Officials said rescue personnel entered the affected houseboat and safely shifted household belongings and other movable property to secure locations as water levels continued to rise inside the structure.
The operation primarily focused on controlling the situation, minimizing property loss and ensuring the safety of those present in and around the houseboat.
Authorities confirmed that the rescue teams successfully evacuated belongings from the damaged structure and managed to bring the situation under control without any reported casualties.
Further assessment of the cause of the incident and the extent of structural damage is underway.
