JAMMU, May 22, 2026 : A 22-year-old woman sustained severe burn injuries after allegedly setting herself on fire near the Tawi bridge area in Jammu following a dispute linked to her relationship, police officials said on Friday.
According to police, the incident took place on Thursday when the woman allegedly poured an inflammable substance on herself and set herself ablaze in what officials described as an act committed in a fit of rage.
Passersby immediately rushed to the spot and managed to extinguish the flames before informing the police. The woman was subsequently shifted to a hospital for treatment.
Officials said the victim suffered nearly 80 percent burn injuries and remains under medical care.
A senior police officer stated that preliminary investigations suggest a strained personal relationship may have triggered the incident.
Police recorded the woman’s statement in the hospital on Thursday night in the presence of a magistrate.
“She told investigators that her boyfriend had not been responding to her phone calls for the past two to three days. She stated that she had no intention to die but acted impulsively in anger,” the officer said.
Police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the matter.
Authorities have urged people facing emotional distress or mental health struggles to seek support from family members, trusted individuals or professional counsellors during difficult situations.
