Jammu, May 31, 2026 : Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly and senior BJP leader Sunil Sharma on Sunday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and the National Conference leadership, alleging that the Abdullah family has historically prioritised political power and official privileges over the larger interests of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing media persons, Sharma claimed that the National Conference’s politics has remained centred on retaining authority and protocol rather than addressing the aspirations of the people.

Taking a swipe at the Chief Minister, Sharma remarked that Omar Abdullah would be willing to compromise on the demand for restoration of full statehood as long as his political status and official privileges remained unaffected.

“Abdullahs don’t resign. Omar would settle for anything below Union Territory status as long as there is no cut in protocol,” Sharma said while criticising the National Conference’s position on Jammu and Kashmir’s political and administrative future.

The BJP leader alleged that the Abdullah family has never voluntarily relinquished power and has consistently focused on maintaining political influence and government positions.

He further accused the National Conference of misleading the public on important political issues and attempting to create confusion regarding constitutional and administrative matters related to Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Sharma, the party’s repeated statements on statehood and governance are aimed at generating political narratives rather than offering practical solutions.

Reiterating the Bharatiya Janata Party’s position, Sharma said the BJP remains committed to ensuring development, transparency, good governance and the strengthening of democratic institutions across Jammu and Kashmir.

He asserted that the Centre has taken several steps in recent years to accelerate infrastructure development, improve public services and expand economic opportunities in the Union Territory.

The senior BJP leader maintained that governance and public welfare should remain the primary focus of political parties rather than what he described as a pursuit of power and protocol.

Sharma’s remarks come amid continuing political discussions surrounding the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, an issue that has remained at the centre of political discourse since the reorganisation of the erstwhile state in August 2019.

The debate over Jammu and Kashmir’s future administrative framework continues to witness sharp exchanges between the ruling National Conference and opposition parties, particularly the BJP, with both sides presenting contrasting views on governance, constitutional changes and the path forward for the Union Territory.
