Anantnag, June 2, 2026 : A tragic incident unfolded in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Tuesday when a man lost his life and his wife sustained critical injuries after a tree suddenly uprooted and fell on them along the Janglat Mandi–Lal Chowk road.
According to officials, the couple was walking along the roadside when an old tree unexpectedly collapsed, trapping them underneath and causing severe injuries. Passersby and locals immediately rushed to their aid before both victims were shifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Despite the efforts of doctors, one of the injured, identified as Mohd Rafiq Khan, a resident of Utross, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
His wife, who also sustained serious injuries in the incident, remains in critical condition and is currently undergoing treatment under medical supervision.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, many of whom have called upon the authorities to undertake a comprehensive survey and inspection of ageing and potentially dangerous trees standing along roadsides across the district.
Residents expressed fears that several old trees pose a risk to pedestrians and motorists, particularly during periods of strong winds or adverse weather conditions. They urged the administration to identify vulnerable trees and take preventive measures to avert similar tragedies in the future.
Meanwhile, officials have taken cognizance of the incident and are examining the circumstances that led to the tree’s collapse.
The unfortunate accident has cast a shadow of grief over the area, with locals mourning the loss of life and praying for the speedy recovery of the injured woman.
