New Delhi, August 18, 2026 : The Congress will convene a meeting of its Congress Working Committee (CWC) in New Delhi on Wednesday, August 19, to deliberate on the prevailing political situation and chalk out its strategy to intensify pressure on the BJP-led Central government over several key issues.
The meeting is scheduled to be held at 3 pm at Indira Bhawan, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge chairing the deliberations. Senior party leaders, including former Congress president Rahul Gandhi, general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K C Venugopal, are expected to participate.
Student Issues and Ram Temple Donation Row on Agenda
According to party sources, the Congress is expected to finalise its political roadmap for taking on the Centre over issues concerning students as well as allegations surrounding the Ram temple donation controversy, which the party has described as a “theft” issue.
The deliberations are likely to focus on how the opposition party can intensify its campaign, raise these issues politically and put greater pressure on the government in Parliament as well as outside it.
Assembly Poll Preparations to Be Reviewed
The CWC is also expected to review the party’s preparations for the Assembly elections likely to be held early next year.
Polls are expected in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, making organisational preparedness and electoral strategy an important part of the discussions.
Senior leaders are likely to assess the party’s ground-level preparations, political strategy and coordination ahead of the crucial electoral battles.
Women’s Reservation and Delimitation Bill
Another major issue likely to figure prominently in the meeting is the possibility of the government introducing a delimitation-linked bill aimed at implementing women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to opposition parties to support such legislation. The Congress has indicated that it is in touch with other political parties and will discuss the matter at the CWC meeting.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had earlier said that the party was consulting other opposition parties and cautioned that the Congress could not afford to “relax” on the issue.
Congress Raises Constitutional Concerns
At its previous CWC meeting in April, the Congress had criticised the Modi government over the proposed delimitation exercise linked to women’s reservation.
The party had alleged that the government was using the women’s reservation law for political purposes and argued that the proposed delimitation process could have serious constitutional and political consequences.
The August 19 meeting is therefore expected to provide an important platform for the Congress leadership to consolidate its position on delimitation, women’s reservation, student-related concerns and other political issues.
With several major political and electoral questions before the party, the CWC deliberations could set the tone for the Congress’s strategy in the coming months.
