KAKAMIGAHARA , OCTOBER 03, 2026 : India created history on Friday by winning the Asian Games women’s hockey gold medal for the first time since 1982, defeating defending champions and Paris Olympic silver-medallists China 1–0 in a tense final.
The victory also secured India direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, giving the team two major achievements on a memorable night.
Lalremsiami Delivers the Decisive Goal
India’s breakthrough came in the 10th minute.
Sakshi Rana threaded a pass into the circle towards Lalremsiami, who produced a spectacular reverse-stick strike on the run. Her powerful effort flew into the upper netting, leaving the Chinese goalkeeper with little chance.
That solitary goal ultimately proved enough.
China dominated possession for long periods after falling behind, but India’s disciplined defence repeatedly denied the defending champions a clear route to goal.
Goalkeeping Heroics Keep India Ahead
India faced their biggest test in the second quarter when China were awarded a penalty stroke in the 24th minute.
Veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia made a crucial diving save to her left, denying China’s attempt to equalise and preserving India’s narrow advantage.
After the interval, China’s pressure intensified.
The hosts earned successive penalty corners, but India’s defenders repeatedly threw themselves into the line of fire. Navneet Kaur produced a vital goal-line clearance, while captain Salima Tete, Ishika Chaudhary, Baljeet Kaur and Sushila Chanu worked relentlessly to disrupt China’s attacking moves.
China Throw Everything Forward
China continued searching for an equaliser as the final entered its closing stages.
With around five minutes remaining, China removed its goalkeeper and sent an additional outfield player onto the pitch, committing all 11 players to attack.
India nevertheless held firm.
Every interception, clearance and block pushed India closer to a historic gold medal, while goalkeeper Bichu Devi remained composed whenever China managed to penetrate the defensive line.
44 Years After the 1982 Triumph
India had last won the Asian Games women’s hockey gold in 1982.
The team subsequently reached the final in 1998 and 2018, but finished with silver medals after losing to South Korea and Japan respectively.
The 2026 final finally ended that long wait.
India’s 1–0 victory over China delivered their second Asian Games women’s hockey gold and, just as importantly, secured their place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
