SRINAGAR, OCTOBER 03, 2026 : BCCI President Mithun Manhas praised the Indian men’s cricket team following its 19-run victory over Pakistan in the Asian Games final, saying the defending champions handled the pressure of the high-stakes contest effectively.
India defeated Pakistan in the final at Nisshin, Japan, retaining the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal. The triumph followed the Indian women’s team also defending its Asian Games cricket title.
Manhas Praises Team Performance
Calling India the standout team of the tournament, Manhas described the campaign as a “commendable” performance and highlighted the players’ ability to deal with pressure during the final.
He particularly praised Tilak Varma and Abhishek Sharma for their contributions in the medal match.
Manhas said India’s batting unit had performed strongly throughout the tournament, while the bowlers collectively defended the total against Pakistan.
Credit to the Openers and Middle Order
Reflecting on India’s batting approach, Manhas said the openers’ role was to establish the platform before the middle order took the innings forward.
He specifically pointed to Abhishek Sharma’s contribution in setting the tone and Tilak Varma’s important innings in the final.
According to Manhas, the team’s success was the result of a collective effort rather than the contribution of any single player.
Praise for Jay Shah
Manhas also acknowledged Jay Shah, the former BCCI secretary and current ICC chief, for his contribution to the development of India’s men’s and women’s cricket teams during his tenure with the BCCI.
He also pointed to India’s women’s team winning the World Cup as another significant achievement during that period.
Victory Dedicated to Fans and Armed Forces
Manhas dedicated India’s Asian Games victory to the country’s cricket supporters and members of the Armed Forces, referring to the sacrifices made by soldiers for the country.
He said the team’s success belonged to the millions of fans who support Indian cricket.
Cricket’s Growing Asian Games Appeal
Manhas also welcomed the growing international participation in cricket at the Asian Games, saying the sport’s inclusion is helping expand its global reach.
He noted that teams from different countries are increasingly participating in international cricket and described its growing presence at multi-sport events as a positive development.
Focus on Jammu & Kashmir Talent
Speaking in Srinagar, Manhas also highlighted the potential of cricketers from Jammu & Kashmir.
He cited Aquib Nabi from Baramulla as an example of a player who progressed through hard work and local cricket. Manhas said there is considerable talent in the region that needs continued nurturing and institutional support.
