NEW DELHI, October 7, 2026 : The Supreme Court on Tuesday advised actor Rajpal Yadav to return to filmmaking and entertain audiences again, observing that a successful movie could help him rebuild his public image amid a long-running legal dispute involving multiple cheque-bounce cases.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana took note of Yadav’s payment of ₹1.15 crore pursuant to the court’s previous order.

The actor was personally present during the hearing.

Supreme Court Gives Actor More Time

During the proceedings, Yadav’s counsel informed the court that a prospective buyer had been found for his property and was prepared to deposit ₹85 lakh by demand draft with the Supreme Court Registry by October 12.

The bench, however, made it clear that it was not satisfied with Yadav’s conduct, while indicating that the court was providing him additional time to address the financial and legal obligations involved in the case.

The matter has now been listed for hearing next week.

CJI’s Light-Hearted Advice

During the hearing, Yadav spoke about the financial difficulties he had faced over the years, particularly the losses associated with his film “Ata Pata Laapata.”

The actor told the court that he had worked in approximately 200 to 250 films and claimed that he had suffered losses of around ₹200–250 crore over the past 13 years.

He specifically referred to Ata Pata Laapata, saying that approximately ₹17 crore had been lost on the project.

Yadav also told the bench that his film had been scheduled to release in around 1,200 theatres, but ultimately failed to release in even a single cinema.

In response, Chief Justice Surya Kant offered an unusual but encouraging suggestion.

The CJI asked whether Yadav had a new film coming and advised him to make a good movie, entertain audiences again and use that opportunity to rebuild his image.

The Chief Justice also jokingly suggested that Yadav could cast lawyers who have acting abilities in the film.

Dispute Linked to ‘Ata Pata Laapata’

The legal dispute dates back to a 2010 financial arrangement involving Yadav’s directorial project Ata Pata Laapata.

According to the complainant, M/s Murli Projects Pvt Ltd provided Yadav with ₹5 crore to finance the film.

The company later alleged that Yadav issued seven cheques of ₹1.05 crore each in 2013 towards settlement of the financial assistance, but the cheques were dishonoured.

The dispute subsequently resulted in a series of cheque-bounce cases.

According to the allegations, an agreement reached in 2012 involving Yadav, his wife Radha Rajpal Yadav, and their company provided for repayment of approximately ₹11 crore, including interest.

Supreme Court Proceedings

The Supreme Court has been considering Yadav’s plea in connection with the proceedings and his request for relief from surrender.

On September 8, 2026, the top court issued notice on Yadav’s plea and said that, subject to a ₹5 crore deposit with the Registry, he could receive exemption from surrender.

On September 15, the court extended his exemption from surrender until October 5.

The latest hearing focused on the payments made and the possibility of further recovery through the proposed sale of property.

Delhi High Court Conviction

The legal battle intensified after the Delhi High Court, on July 10, upheld Yadav’s conviction in multiple cheque-bounce cases and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment.

The High Court also directed him to pay more than ₹1 crore to the complainant in each of the seven complaints.

However, approximately ₹2 crore already paid by Yadav was ordered to be adjusted.

The sentence was kept in abeyance for two months, allowing the actor an opportunity to approach the appellate court.

Delay in Challenging Conviction

The Delhi High Court had also refused to condone what it described as an “extraordinary” delay of 1,894 days — more than five years — in filing petitions challenging the conviction.

The cases arose from earlier judicial proceedings in which Yadav and his wife had challenged their convictions in the cheque-bounce matters.

Wife Also Fined

The High Court additionally directed Yadav’s wife, Radha Rajpal Yadav, to pay approximately ₹5.5 lakh as a fine in each of the seven complaints.

The order stated that failure to pay the fine could result in three months of simple imprisonment.

Earlier Court Decisions

The High Court’s July verdict followed revision petitions filed by Rajpal Yadav and his wife challenging a 2019 sessions court decision.

The sessions court had upheld their conviction by a magistrate in April 2018.

The magistrate had initially sentenced Yadav to six months’ imprisonment, a sentence that was subsequently reduced to three months.

A Legal Battle Behind a Film Career

The case has placed one of Bollywood’s best-known comic actors in an unusual position, with his courtroom proceedings now intersecting with his long career in Indian cinema.

Yadav has appeared in hundreds of films and became particularly popular for his comic and supporting roles.

His directorial venture Ata Pata Laapata, however, became associated with substantial financial difficulties and eventually became central to the legal dispute.

During the latest hearing, Yadav sought to explain his financial circumstances and the difficulties he had experienced following the film’s failure.

Matter to Be Heard Next Week

The Supreme Court has now given the matter another hearing next week.

The court’s latest proceedings took note of the ₹1.15 crore already deposited, while Yadav’s counsel indicated that a further ₹85 lakh could be deposited following the proposed property transaction.

At the same time, the bench made clear that Yadav’s conduct remained a concern.

For the actor, the next hearing could prove important as he continues to seek relief in the long-running dispute.

The Supreme Court’s unusual advice to return to filmmaking and entertain audiences again, meanwhile, added a lighter moment to proceedings otherwise dominated by questions of financial liability, court orders and compliance.
