LOS ANGELES, OCTOBER 17, 2026 : Hollywood stars Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas are set to headline the fifth season of HBO’s acclaimed crime anthology series True Detective, with production scheduled to begin in 2027.
HBO confirmed the casting announcement through its official social media channels, generating excitement among fans of the long-running crime drama.
“Cage. Banderas. Season 5 of #TrueDetective starts production in 2027,” the network announced.
According to Variety, Cage will play Henry Logan, while Banderas will portray Rai Garcia. The upcoming season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. HBO has not yet revealed further details about the characters or the central investigation.
Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas Lead the New Season
Cage, an Academy Award-winning actor, is known for his performances in films including Leaving Las Vegas, Con Air, Adaptation, National Treasure, Pig and Dream Scenario.
The actor had hinted at his involvement in the series during an appearance at New York Comic Con the previous week, sparking speculation about his next major project.
The upcoming season will mark another significant television role for Cage following his appearance in Spider-Noir, released on Prime Video earlier in 2026, according to the supplied report.
Banderas, meanwhile, brings extensive film and television experience to the franchise. He received an Emmy nomination for portraying Spanish artist Pablo Picasso in the second season of National Geographic’s anthology series Genius in 2018.
His other television credits include the Spanish series Pestañas postizas and appearances in several television productions earlier in his career.
Issa López Returns as Showrunner
Issa López, who created and directed the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, will return for the fifth instalment as writer, director and showrunner.
Her return follows the fourth season’s expansion of the franchise into a new setting and investigation, continuing the series’ tradition of reinventing its story and characters with each instalment.
Further information about the new season’s supporting cast, storyline and release date has not yet been announced.
A New Chapter for HBO’s Acclaimed Crime Anthology
Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective debuted in 2014 with a first season starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as Louisiana detectives investigating a series of murders.
The anthology format allows each season to introduce a different investigation, setting and largely new cast. Subsequent instalments have featured performers including Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff.
The series has earned 41 Emmy nominations and won six awards, including acting honours for McConaughey, Harrelson, Ali and Jodie Foster.
Production Set for 2027
With Cage and Banderas joining the cast and López returning behind the camera, the fifth season is shaping up to be a major new chapter for the franchise.
The Jamaica Bay setting and the mystery surrounding the characters Henry Logan and Rai Garcia offer the series another opportunity to explore a dark and complex criminal investigation.
Although the plot remains under wraps, the combination of two internationally recognised actors and the return of the previous season’s creative lead is likely to attract considerable attention from crime-drama fans.
