RAJANPUR / LAHORE, PAKISTAN, October 21, 2026 : At least 11 people, including women and children, were killed and more than 30 others injured after a speeding passenger bus collided with a road divider and overturned in Pakistan’s Punjab province on Wednesday, according to officials.
The fatal accident occurred in Rajanpur, approximately 500 kilometres from Lahore, while the bus was travelling from Karachi towards Dera Ghazi Khan district in Punjab. The crash triggered an emergency rescue operation, with several passengers reportedly trapped inside the overturned vehicle.
ROAD CONSTRUCTION AREA IDENTIFIED AS KEY FACTOR
According to a spokesperson for Pakistan’s emergency response service, Rescue 1122, the accident occurred on a section of the highway where construction work was underway.
Citing eyewitness accounts, the spokesperson said overspeeding was believed to have contributed to the crash. The bus reportedly struck the divider before overturning, leaving passengers dead, injured and trapped inside the vehicle.
However, the precise circumstances leading to the accident would require further investigation to establish the cause and determine whether other factors contributed to the tragedy.
EIGHT PASSENGERS DIED AT THE SCENE
The Rescue 1122 spokesperson said eight passengers died at the scene, while three others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to hospital, bringing the death toll to 11.
More than 30 passengers sustained injuries of varying severity. Three injured people were reported to be in critical condition, raising concerns about the possibility of further casualties.
Rescue personnel worked to evacuate those trapped in the wreckage and provide emergency medical assistance to the injured.
INJURED PASSENGERS RUSHED TO HOSPITALS
According to a rescue official, 19 injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Another 12 people who suffered minor injuries received medical assistance at the accident site.
Rescue teams also transferred the bodies of the deceased, including women and children, to nearby hospitals as authorities began responding to the aftermath of the crash.
The large number of casualties placed immediate importance on emergency medical care, particularly for those suffering serious injuries.
MARYAM NAWAZ EXPRESSES GRIEF, ORDERS ACTION
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed grief over the loss of lives and conveyed condolences to the bereaved families.
She directed the authorities to ensure the best possible medical treatment for all injured passengers and called for immediate action against those found responsible for the accident.
Her response came as rescue and medical teams continued their work following one of the latest deadly road accidents reported in the province.
ROAD SAFETY CONCERNS UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT
The crash has once again drawn attention to road safety risks associated with speeding, passenger transport and travel through areas where road construction is underway.
Work zones can present additional hazards when traffic management, warning signs, lane arrangements or speed controls are inadequate. Establishing whether any such shortcomings contributed to this particular accident will depend on the findings of the relevant authorities.
The incident also highlights the importance of enforcing speed limits, maintaining safe highway conditions, ensuring proper traffic diversions around construction sites and strengthening emergency response arrangements.
INVESTIGATION AND MEDICAL CARE REMAIN PRIORITIES
With 11 confirmed deaths and more than 30 people injured, the immediate priorities are the treatment of survivors, support for the affected families and a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
Authorities have been directed to take action against those responsible, while the condition of the critically injured passengers remains a major concern.
The tragedy in Rajanpur serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that serious road accidents can have on passengers, families and communities.
