Jammu, Sept 24 – The stage is set for the second phase of polling in 11 Assembly constituencies across three districts in Jammu division – Rajouri, Poonch, and Reasi – tomorrow. With security concerns looming large, authorities have left no stone unturned to ensure a smooth voting process.
Militancy-infested areas have been sanitized, and polling parties have been dispatched to booths equipped with Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). Senior officers are conducting rounds to ensure everything goes off without a hitch.
Security Beefed Up
The Army has been deployed in mountainous regions for anti-terror operations, while paramilitary forces and police personnel are stationed in large numbers at polling booths and surrounding areas.
Polling Stations Near LoC on High Alert
Some polling stations in Rajouri and Poonch districts are situated close to the Line of Control (LoC), where contingency plans are in place. However, ceasefire violations have been rare since India and Pakistan renewed their agreement on February 25, 2021.
Terror Threat Looms Large
Recent terror attacks in the region, including the brutal assault on pilgrims in Reasi’s Teryath village, have underscored the need for heightened security. Authorities are determined to prevent any disruptions during voting.
Candidates in Fray
A total of 79 candidates are vying for seats across the three districts:
• Rajouri district: 34 candidates
• Poonch district: 25 candidates
• Reasi district: 20 candidates
Voter Turnout Expected to be High
Past elections have seen high voter turnout in these districts, with Gulabgarh recording 82.09% and Gool-Arnas 82.58% in 2014.
