Srinagar, Oct 30, 2024 : Senior National Conference leader and Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi has written to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stating that it is “crucial to respect the people’s mandate and to align your government’s actions with the aspirations of the citizens.”

Mehdi has suggested several “priorities” and maintained these “may come through the decisions of your government that could greatly impact the welfare of our society.”

“Congratulations on assuming the office of Chief Minister. This is a significant opportunity to lead with vision and integrity, and I wish you success in fulfilling the responsibilities that come with this esteemed position,” the MP wrote in the letter.

Stating that “it is crucial to respect the people’s mandate and to align your government’s actions with the aspirations of the citizens,” the senior leader said he was sure “you will address the political issue through the Assembly.”

“I would like to suggest some priorities which may come through the decisions of your government that could greatly impact the welfare of our society,” Mehdi said.

The release of prisoners has been mentioned as the urgent matter whom, he said, are held without trial. “Your government should prioritise efforts to facilitate their release, ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law. This action would resonate deeply with those who value fairness and due process,” he said.

The second issue is rationalisation of reservation policies. “It is essential to revisit the recent reservation policies. A balanced approach that supports deserving sections of society while maintaining open merit is necessary to foster an inclusive environment. Rationalising these policies can promote social equity without compromising the standards of excellence,” the MP wrote.

He also suggested the swift filling of government vacancies. It “should be a priority as it will provide thousands of deserving candidates with employment opportunities, thereby bolstering the local economy and reducing unemployment.”

Another issue is electricity tariffs and supply. The MP has said with winter approaching, it is vital to address the high electricity tariffs that burden consumers. “Reducing these tariffs and ensuring a stable supply of electricity will help families withstand the harsh winter conditions,” he said.

The NC leader has mentioned the verification process. “The existing verification process is overly harsh and often penalises individuals for actions they did not commit,” he said. “This procedure should be reconsidered to ensure they are fair and just for all applicants.”

Mehdi writes he hopes that the CM considers these suggestions “as you work to meet the expectations of the people.” “Your leadership has the potential to pave the way for a progressive and just administration,” he said.

Senior PDP leader and MLA Pulwama, Waheed Para, hailed Srinagar MP’s letter to Omar. “Amid growing concerns over NC’s passive stance on key political issues, we commend Mehdi’s courage in reminding both the NC and the Chief Minister of their promises to the people,” Para wrote on X. “Let’s hope NC heeds this call from its Srinagar MP and honours the people’s mandate.”
