Jammu, July 24, 2025: Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) chairperson Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday reaffirmed his strong support for the immediate restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, calling it vital for the region’s development and unity.
Speaking during a visit to Reasi district, Azad said, “I am thankful to the Prime Minister and the Home Minister for their commitment to restore statehood. I firmly believe they will keep their word—but the sooner it happens, the better for everyone.”
He emphasized that the issue transcends political or religious boundaries: “This is not about Hindus or Muslims, or Jammu or Kashmir. It concerns every party, religion, and community. Statehood is essential for all political parties—be it BJP, National Conference, or PDP.”
Azad recalled his time as a Union Minister when he had recommended the elevation of three Union Territories into states, all of which were granted statehood. “Unfortunately, for the first time, I saw my own state being reduced to a Union Territory. That was a sad moment,” he remarked.
Distinguishing between Article 370 and statehood, Azad said, “They are two separate matters. Our immediate demand is statehood restoration. I’ve already detailed my views on Article 370 in Parliament, and the media has heard them.” He added that restoration could only happen if the Prime Minister introduces a bill in Parliament or the Supreme Court intervenes.
On speculation around his nomination for the Vice President’s post, Azad dismissed it as baseless. “These are just rumours. Jammu and Kashmir has real issues—development, unemployment, and governance—that deserve our full attention,” he said.
Urging the media and public to focus on meaningful issues, he concluded, “Instead of chasing baseless gossip, let’s work together for progress. Jammu and Kashmir needs constructive efforts, not distractions.”
