Ramban, August 1, 2025 : All spillway gates of the Baglihar Hydroelectric Power Project in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district have been opened following persistent heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to issue safety advisories for the public.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Ramban, Varunjeet Singh Charak, confirmed the development, saying, “We received a formal communication from the engineering and mechanical division of the Baglihar project, requesting the issuance of an advisory as they began releasing excess water.”
In response, the district administration has advised people to stay away from riverbanks and tributaries of the Chenab River, citing potential danger to life and property.
The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Ramban has directed Revenue, Police, SDRF, and Rural Development Department officials to closely coordinate and monitor vulnerable stretches along the river. Local functionaries, including Lamberdars, Chowkidars, GRS, and VLWs, have been instructed to caution residents against movement near riverbanks. The advisory also applies to livestock, rafts, and vehicles.
According to NHPC officials, the rising water level in the Chenab due to continuous rainfall necessitated the opening of all spillway gates as a precautionary measure.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has issued a fresh weather advisory, warning of potential flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas across Jammu and Kashmir.
The forecast for July 31 predicted cloudy skies with scattered rain or thundershowers, including localized heavy downpours in parts of the Jammu Division. From August 1 to 3, the weather is expected to remain hot and humid, with isolated rain in some areas. Between August 4 and 6, light to moderate rainfall is likely across many parts of the Union Territory, with the possibility of heavy showers during late night and early morning hours in specific Jammu regions.
