Jammu, February 2, 2026 : BJP legislators led by Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma on Sunday joined the ongoing protest by Jammu University students, extending full support to their demand for the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in Jammu.
The BJP MLAs—Advocate R.S. Pathania, Shagun Parihar and Devyani Rana—sat on a dharna at the university campus, backing the students’ 25-day-long agitation, amid slogans against the government. The legislators asserted that the issue would be raised both on the streets and inside the Legislative Assembly, whose session begins on Monday.
“This is not just the students’ fight; it is the fight of the entire Jammu region. We will demand a National Law University in Jammu during the Assembly session,” Sharma told reporters, warning that failure to address the demand could lead to a mass agitation involving all BJP legislators.
He further assured students of support in mobilising funds, stating that the BJP would help secure Central government assistance if required for setting up the university.
The protest has intensified in recent days. On Friday, students staged a massive demonstration and blocked the busy Tawi Bridge for over an hour. Tensions escalated when police attempted to disperse the protesters and detained some students, following which Yuva Rajput Sabha president Mandeep Singh Chib and others resisted by blocking a police vehicle.
Students maintain that the establishment of an NLU in Jammu is long overdue and essential to ensure equitable access to premier legal education for the region.
