Srinagar, February 1, 2026 : The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has launched intensive snow clearance operations on the Pahalgam–Chandanwari Road, a crucial stretch serving as the gateway to the revered Amarnath Yatra route in Anantnag district, officials said on Sunday.
A BRO official said the 17-kilometre Pahalgam–Chandanwari stretch, which has experienced heavy snowfall over the past two weeks, is being cleared of snow that has accumulated up to four to eight feet in several sections.
“The operations are aimed at ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for security forces deployed along the route to guard the Amarnath cave shrine,” the official added, noting that the movement of troops and logistics depends on open and navigable roads.
Despite extremely challenging weather conditions and constant avalanche threat, BRO personnel have been working round the clock with heavy machinery to maintain access and ensure essential communication links remain functional throughout the winter season.
Efforts are underway to keep the entire belt accessible for most of the winter, as early preparations begin well before the commencement of the annual pilgrimage season.
The snow clearance initiative underscores the BRO’s commitment to maintaining all-weather connectivity in high-altitude areas and supporting the security apparatus during sensitive operations and pilgrimages.
