Jammu, March 28, 2026 : Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday asserted that cable car projects are not a standalone solution for boosting tourism in Jammu and Kashmir, stressing the need for a comprehensive, region-specific development approach.
Cable Cars ≠ Guaranteed Tourism Boom
Responding to a query by MLA Javaid Ahmad Mirchal, the CM said comparisons with Gulmarg are misleading:
- 🎿 Gulmarg’s gondola is a major success
- 🚠 Similar projects in Srinagar, Jammu and Patnitop have not seen comparable footfall
“Assuming a cable car alone will attract tourists is a misconception,” he noted.
Focus on Holistic Tourism Development
The CM emphasized key pillars for sustainable tourism growth:
- 🛣️ Improved infrastructure & connectivity
- 🏡 Promotion of homestays for local benefit
- 🌱 Sustainable and inclusive development
- 🧭 Area-specific planning for each destination
He highlighted the untapped potential of Karnah region for:
- 🥾 Trekking & hiking
- 🌄 Scenic tourism
- 🌍 Adventure tourism
Tourism Expansion in Doda
Replying to BJP MLA Shakti Raj Parihar, Abdullah said efforts are underway to boost tourism in Doda, including destinations like:
- Lal Draman, Dedni, Dal Draman
- Ramrachna, Galadhar, Dessa
New areas under consideration include:
- Udhrana & Sarna (Bhaderwah)
- Nalthi, Chinta, Guldanda
- Padri, Khaleni Top, Shibnote Premna
Mantalai Wellness Centre Still Awaiting Operator
On the International Yoga & Wellness Centre at Mantalai, raised by MLA Balwant Singh Mankotia:
- ❗ No suitable operator found yet
- 🧘 Facility traces back to Dhirendra Brahmachari’s ashram
- 📑 Govt to float fresh EOI with relaxed conditions

The government aims to:
