New Delhi, September 2, 2025 : The Congress on Tuesday pressed the Central government to urgently release funds for flood-hit states in North India, stressing that relief must rise above politics.
Party president Mallikarjun Kharge said over 2.5 lakh people in Punjab are struggling with devastating floods, with lives lost and livelihoods destroyed. He expressed condolences to affected families and assured that the Congress would extend all possible assistance.
Kharge demanded that the Centre announce a dedicated relief package for Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Haryana, and utilise the PM CARES Fund to ensure fair compensation for victims.
“There should be no politicking in the wake of natural disasters. Relief, rehabilitation, and timely medical aid must be prioritised,” Kharge said, urging the Modi government to act swiftly.
The floods and landslides have already claimed seven lives in Himachal and Uttarakhand, while Punjab witnessed another spell of torrential rain on Monday, forcing the closure of all schools and colleges. In Jammu and Kashmir, the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage remains suspended for the seventh consecutive day after a landslide killed 34 devotees last week.
