Kathua, September 6, 2025 : Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, on Saturday conducted an extensive inspection of the ongoing protection works along the Ravi River embankment near Lakhanpur, which has suffered extensive damage due to the recent spell of torrential rains.
He was accompanied by Deputy Commissioner Kathua, SSP Kathua, Project Director NHAI, senior officers of the Punjab Irrigation Department and representatives of the Indian Army.
During the visit, the Divisional Commissioner held a detailed review with all stakeholders—including Kathua District Administration, Punjab Irrigation Department, NHAI, and Army authorities—focusing on a multi-pronged strategy to divert water flow, secure critical infrastructure, and minimize risks to life and property.

DC Kathua apprised the Div Com about the emerging situation and measures being undertaken to protect vital installations such as the Office of the DDC Chairman, Animal Husbandry Check Post, and adjoining government buildings. He informed that men and machinery have been mobilised on war footing to raise crates and strengthen vulnerable stretches of the embankment.
Directives by the Divisional Commissioner
The Divisional Commissioner directed the concerned departments to:

Maintain constant inter-departmental coordination.

Ensure round-the-clock monitoring of embankments.

Deploy adequate resources to complete protective works within set timelines.

Immediately plug weak points and strengthen critical stretches of the embankment.
He stressed the urgency of the situation and called for proactive measures to prevent any breach that could endanger surrounding habitations.
Long-Term Flood Management
Ramesh Kumar further emphasized the need to explore long-term measures for permanent flood protection, including structural reinforcements and river course management. He underlined the importance of close liaison between J&K and Punjab authorities to evolve a joint flood management mechanism for the Ravi River basin.
Relief and Restoration Review
Meanwhile, the Div Com also reviewed relief and restoration measures in the affected areas of Kathua district. He directed the district administration to:

Expedite restoration of road connectivity disrupted by heavy rains.

Ensure full restoration of power and water supply in pending areas.

Monitor the delivery of relief supplies to affected families on priority.
The Div Com reiterated the administration’s commitment to safeguarding both lives and infrastructure, assuring that immediate as well as long-term measures will be implemented to mitigate future risks along the Ravi River.
