Srinagar, July 21, 2025 : Minister for Health, Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, Sakeena Itoo, on Monday stressed the urgent need for a united fight against drug abuse, calling it a critical threat to the well-being of Jammu and Kashmir’s youth and future generations.
Speaking at a day-long seminar titled “Drug-Free Kashmir: A Practical Step Towards a Drug-Free Society” at Government College of Education (GCOE), MA Road, the Minister underscored the importance of a coordinated effort involving community stakeholders, religious leaders, law enforcement, educators, and citizens.
“A drug-free Jammu and Kashmir is not just a goal—it’s a necessity for the survival and well-being of our future generations,” Itoo said. She added that the government alone cannot tackle the crisis and called for collective responsibility and grassroots involvement to combat the growing menace.
The Minister highlighted the government’s initiatives, including setting up drug de-addiction centres across districts, and urged families, civil society, and religious institutions to play a more active role.
Commending the organisers, she said such seminars must lead to actionable strategies that address the root causes of substance abuse and help preserve the region’s social and cultural fabric.
The event featured cultural performances highlighting the impact of drug abuse and witnessed wide participation from students, youth leaders, educators, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, and civil society members.
Prominent attendees included Joint Director Information Kashmir Syed Shahnawaz Bukhari, Nodal Principal Kashmir Division Colleges Prof. Seema Naz, Principals of Government Women’s College and GCOE Srinagar, along with senior officials from the district administration.
