SRINAGAR, February 24, 2026 : Security has been significantly tightened across Kashmir ahead of the maiden visit of C P Radhakrishnan to the Valley on February 26, officials said on Tuesday.
The Vice President is scheduled to attend and address the 21st Convocation of the University of Kashmir in Srinagar, marking his first visit to Kashmir since assuming office.
Multi-Layered Security Grid
Authorities have put in place a comprehensive, multi-tier security mechanism, with special focus on the Hazratbal area where the university campus is located, along with other vital and sensitive installations across the Valley.

Enhanced deployment of security forces at vulnerable locations

Heightened surveillance and intelligence-gathering mechanisms

Additional checkpoints at key entry and exit points of Srinagar

Random checking of vehicles, particularly on routes leading to the university

Increased day and night patrolling, area domination exercises and surprise inspections
Officials said these measures are aimed at preventing any untoward incident and ensuring the safety of the Vice President, students, faculty members and the general public.
Counter-Terror Preparedness
Counter-insurgency units and Quick Reaction Teams (QRTs) have been strategically deployed to ensure swift response to any emerging threat. Security agencies are maintaining a high level of alert to counter potential terror risks, with special emphasis on securing critical infrastructure.
High-Level Review
Last week, V K Birdi, Inspector General of Police (Kashmir), reviewed the security arrangements during a high-level meeting at Police Control Room (PCR) Kashmir.
He directed officers to:

Intensify round-the-clock patrolling in both urban and rural areas

Strengthen surveillance at key entry and exit points

Ensure all personnel are fully briefed on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Closely monitor vulnerable areas for prompt action against suspicious activity
Convocation Details
The Vice President will be the Chief Guest and deliver the convocation address.
The event will be presided over by Manoj Sinha, Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and Chancellor of the University, while Omar Abdullah will attend as Guest of Honour.
During the 21st Convocation, a total of 59,558 degrees will be conferred, including:
