Srinagar, July 8, 2025: National Conference president and former J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday termed the Election Commission’s move to revise electoral rolls in Bihar as “anti-Constitutional” and accused it of working under political influence.
Speaking to reporters in Kulgam, Abdullah strongly objected to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls announced by the EC, saying it could disenfranchise millions of Biharis working outside the state.
“More than 1.5 crore Biharis are living and working outside the state. How will they fill the form? How will they vote? Where will they get death certificates of their parents for updating records?” he asked.
He accused the Election Commission of undermining constitutional rights. “Dr. Ambedkar gave every citizen the right to vote. Now, they’re bringing a law that violates that right — just to please their masters. They’re ready to sacrifice everything for power,” Abdullah said.
Calling the move unacceptable to the people of India, he warned of a larger agitation. “There will be a nationwide movement to protect the Constitution — even bigger than previous ones. May Allah give them wisdom,” he added.
The Election Commission had on June 24 announced a special drive in Bihar to weed out ineligible voters and include eligible citizens, citing rapid urbanisation, migration, unreported deaths, and presence of illegal immigrants.
Notably, the last such exercise in Bihar was conducted in 2003. The state is set to go to polls later this year.
