Jammu, February 18, 2026 : In a landmark boost to healthcare and medical education in Jammu and Kashmir, Government Medical College Anantnag has become the first newly established GMC in the Union Territory to receive approval for a Superspeciality course in Cardiology.
The National Board of Examinations has accredited three DrNB Cardiology seats to the Department of Cardiology at GMC Anantnag, marking a major leap in the institution’s evolution into a centre for advanced medical education and tertiary healthcare.
The approval reflects the sustained push by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, led by Omar Abdullah, to decentralise superspeciality care and expand access to high-end medical services across the region.
Congratulating the administration, faculty and staff of GMC Anantnag, Sakeena Itoo, Minister for Health and Medical Education, termed the achievement a testament to teamwork and institutional readiness.
“The Government is determined to ensure that people of Jammu and Kashmir have access to high-quality specialised healthcare. The approval of a Superspeciality Cardiology course at GMC Anantnag is a major stride in that direction,” the Minister said.
She noted that the new course will significantly strengthen tertiary cardiac care in South Kashmir, reduce patient referrals outside the UT, and provide timely, specialised treatment closer to home.
The Minister further highlighted that the government has adopted a comprehensive upgradation strategy—including infrastructure development, recruitment of specialist faculty, procurement of advanced equipment, and expansion of academic programmes—to strengthen medical institutions across J&K.
With the introduction of the Superspeciality Cardiology course, GMC Anantnag is set to emerge as a key hub for advanced cardiac care, research and specialist training, offering new opportunities to postgraduate medical aspirants while improving patient outcomes.
The NBEMS accreditation not only elevates the stature of GMC Anantnag but also sets a benchmark for peripheral and newly established medical colleges nationwide, reinforcing J&K’s vision of a robust, accessible and patient-centric healthcare system.
