Jammu, February 13, 2026 : The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced a comprehensive and modern development plan for Qazigund, popularly known as the “Gateway of Kashmir,” citing its strategic importance as the southern entry point to the Valley.
The government’s response came in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly to a query raised by MLA Abdul Majeed Bhat.
Highlighting Qazigund’s role as a major road and rail transit hub connecting the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country, the government said the town has been prioritised for planned and sustainable urban development.
The proposed development plan includes:

Widening and strengthening of roads and internal streets

Improvement of drainage systems and construction of footpaths

Augmentation of drinking water supply

Development of sewerage and sanitation infrastructure

Implementation of scientific solid waste management systems

Upgradation of public amenities and essential urban services

Landscaping and beautification projects to enhance the town’s aesthetics
According to the government, these initiatives are being undertaken under various Central and Union Territory schemes, in line with approved norms, technical feasibility, and availability of funds.
The development process is being executed in phases to ensure balanced growth, environmental sustainability, and improved quality of life for residents, while also catering to the needs of commuters and tourists entering the Valley.
Urban Local Bodies and concerned line departments have been tasked with implementing the projects within the established urban planning framework, the government added.
