New Delhi, March 24, 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the government is making all possible efforts to procure gas and crude oil from multiple global sources to safeguard India’s energy needs amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
Addressing the Rajya Sabha, the Prime Minister expressed concern over the escalating tensions in the region, stating that the conflict has triggered a serious global energy crisis.
He emphasized that India supports peace and stability through dialogue and diplomacy, and is actively advocating for de-escalation of the conflict. Stressing the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, Modi said efforts are being made to ensure its reopening and smooth flow of energy supplies.
“If the West Asia crisis continues for a prolonged period, it could have serious global consequences,” he cautioned.
Highlighting India’s preparedness, the Prime Minister said the country has significantly strengthened its energy security over the past 11 years. He noted that strategic oil reserves of 53 lakh metric tonnes have already been developed, with an additional capacity of 65 lakh metric tonnes under progress.
He also mentioned a major ₹70,000-crore initiative aimed at boosting domestic shipbuilding capacity, which will further support energy transportation and logistics.
Reaffirming India’s approach, Modi said the government will continue to explore all avenues to ensure uninterrupted energy supply while advocating for peaceful resolution of global conflicts.
