New Delhi/Jammu, November 23, 2025 : Marking a major step toward gender-inclusive border management, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) announced the establishment of 10 all-women Border Outposts (BOPs) along the 3,488 km India-China Line of Actual Control (LAC), one of the world’s toughest and coldest conflict frontiers.
The announcement was made by ITBP Director General Praveen Kumar during the 64th Raising Day parade held in Jammu on Saturday.
Forwardisation Push After 2020 Ladakh Clash
The ITBP chief said the force has significantly accelerated its forwardisation plan—initiated after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash—strengthening India’s strategic presence in high-altitude sectors.
Key Highlights:
-
215 forward-deployed BOPs, up from 180 earlier
-
7 new battalions + 1 sector headquarters sanctioned in 2023 (approx. 9,400 personnel)
-
41 new forward bases planned along the LAC
These measures aim to enhance surveillance, rapid response capability, and supervision of forward areas.
Women on the Frontline
To expand the role of women in high-altitude combat and border duties, the ITBP is operationalising:
-
2 all-women BOPs already underway at:
-
Lukung (Ladakh)
-
Thangi (Himachal Pradesh)
-
-
8 additional all-women BOPs to be established soon
This marks the first time women will independently man forward posts along the LAC, operating in altitudes between 9,000 ft to 14,000+ ft, under extreme cold, low oxygen, and harsh terrain.
Training Reinforced for High-Altitude Combat
DG Praveen Kumar said the force has reorganised its training structure and launched five new specialised skilling modules, including:
-
Mountain warfare
-
Tactical survival
-
High-altitude endurance
-
Advanced weapon handling
-
Border surveillance techniques
The ITBP, known as the “Himalayan Sentinels”, has over one lakh personnel and functions under the Union Home Ministry.
Strategic Importance
With China’s infrastructure build-up along the LAC, India’s decision to push forward BOPs and empower women combatants strengthens:
-
High-altitude dominance
-
Border vigilance
-
Operational flexibility
-
Gender-inclusive defence capability
The all-women BOPs signal a shift toward modern, dynamic border security aligned with India’s long-term strategic goals.
