New Delhi, October 15, 2025 : The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned to October 29 the hearing on a plea filed by Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). The adjournment followed her indication to amend the petition.
A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N V Anjaria noted that an affidavit from the Jodhpur jailor confirmed that Wangchuk’s elder brother and lawyer had met him.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Angmo, informed the Court that an application would be filed to amend the plea and challenge the grounds of detention. He also requested that Wangchuk be allowed to exchange notes with his wife, to which Solicitor General Tushar Mehta raised no objection.
Wangchuk was detained under the NSA on September 26, 2025, two days after violent protests in Ladakh demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule status left four dead and 90 injured. The government alleged that he incited the violence.
Under the NSA, individuals can be detained to prevent actions “prejudicial to the defence of India,” with a maximum detention of 12 months, though it can be revoked earlier. Wangchuk is currently lodged in Jodhpur Jail, Rajasthan.
