Jammu, August 1, 2025 : Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday visited the family of Parvez Ahmed, a 21-year-old Gujjar youth allegedly killed during a police operation in Jammu’s Satwari area, and demanded a time-bound judicial probe into the incident.
Parvez, a resident of the Nikki Tawi area, was reportedly caught in crossfire as police chased suspected drug peddlers. His death has triggered protests from the Gujjar-Bakerwal community, with the family alleging that he was killed in a “staged encounter.”
Calling for accountability, Mufti said, “This is not crossfire—it is an extra-judicial killing. Such actions have no place in a democratic society. A fair and impartial probe must be conducted immediately.”
Accompanied by senior PDP leaders, the former Chief Minister met the grieving family and offered her condolences. She alleged that the youth was “executed” by those responsible for public safety. “This is state-sponsored terror targeting marginalised communities,” she said.
Mufti warned that such incidents deepen alienation and erode trust in democratic institutions. “Parvez’s death is not an isolated case—it fits into a chilling pattern. Over a dozen Gujjar-Bakerwal youth have died under suspicious circumstances in the past year,” she said.
Highlighting the continued plight of nomadic communities, she said they face frequent harassment during their seasonal cattle migrations. “People had hoped the elected government would bring relief, but the cycle of violence continues. The Gujjar-Bakerwal community, which stood by Jammu & Kashmir during its most turbulent times, is now being betrayed,” Mufti told reporters.
The PDP has demanded swift action, warning that justice delayed will only widen existing fault lines within society.
