SRINAGAR, September 19, 2025 : Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President and former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging a compassionate and urgent review of the case of jailed Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Yasin Malik.
Key Highlights from Mehbooba’s Appeal:
-
Transformation Highlighted: Mehbooba underscored Malik’s 1994 decision to renounce violence and adopt non-violent political methods, calling it a “rare and courageous step” towards reconciliation.
-
Role in Peace Efforts: She reminded that Malik had acted as a bridge in peace processes, engaging in back-channel talks with Indian agencies and successive governments with tacit approval.
-
Concern Over Punishment: Mehbooba cautioned that Malik’s facing life imprisonment or possible death penalty could “shatter fragile trust” and further alienate Kashmiris from democratic processes.
-
Appeal for Mercy & Justice:
“The spirit of India lies in our capacity to show magnanimity and uphold promises made in pursuit of peace. Closing doors on Malik’s case risks perpetuating the cycle of conflict.”
She urged the Union Government to exercise democratic instruments that balance justice with compassion, stressing that reconciliation and dialogue are the only path toward lasting peace in Jammu & Kashmir.
Social Media Statement:
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Mehbooba reiterated her stand:
“I have written to Hon’ble Home Minister @AmitShah Ji seeking a compassionate review of Yasin Malik’s case. At a time when J&K desperately needs healing and reconciliation, shutting the door forever on a man who once renounced violence for political engagement will only deepen alienation. Justice must walk hand in hand with mercy.”
