Srinagar, Aug 14, 2025 : PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said the Supreme Court’s reference to the recent Pahalgam terror attack during a hearing on restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood reflects the Centre’s continuing lack of confidence in the region’s stability, even after revoking its special status and downgrading it to a Union Territory.
Her remarks came after the apex court sought the Centre’s response within eight weeks to a plea seeking statehood restoration. Chief Justice B R Gavai, responding to the petitioner’s counsel, cited the Pahalgam incident and said it was for Parliament and the Executive to decide.
In a post on X, Mehbooba said the BJP-led government appears unwilling to loosen its grip on J&K, calling it a “political and psychological deadlock.” She stressed that the issue goes beyond statehood and requires addressing the “core political aspirations” of the people.
