Jammu, March 31, 2026 : The Government of India is examining proposals for Metrolite and Light Metro projects in Jammu and Srinagar to upgrade urban transport infrastructure, Minister Sakeena Itoo informed the Legislative Assembly.
Replying on behalf of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to a query by MLA Mohan Lal, the Minister said that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for both cities have been completed and submitted for appraisal.
Jammu Metrolite Project Highlights
- Corridor: Bantalab to Bari Brahmana
- Length: 23 km
- Stations: 22
- Estimated daily ridership: 2.84 lakh by 2035
- Land requirement: 29.58 hectares (permanent) + 1.50 hectares (temporary)
- Economic Internal Rate of Return (EIRR): 18.92%
The DPR, prepared by RITES Limited, includes alignment design, traffic studies, feasibility analysis, environmental and seismic considerations, along with financial structuring.
The Minister clarified that no proposal currently exists to extend the corridor to Akhnoor, and any such expansion would require fresh feasibility studies and central approval.
Srinagar Metro Proposal
For Srinagar, comprehensive work including:
- Topographical surveys
- Traffic and ridership studies
- Engineering feasibility
- Financial and economic analysis
has also been completed by RITES Limited, with the DPR submitted to the Centre.
Next Step
Both projects are now under review by the Government of India, and further progress will depend on appraisal and approval at the central level.
